But the 'humanization' of dogs gained momentum about two years ago with a little help from Hollywood. In the first 'Legally Blonde' movie, Elle dressed her Chihuahua, Bruiser, in a matching outfit and carried him in a stylish carrier. Then Lola, shock-rocker Ozzy Osbourne's Hawaiian-shirt-wearing bulldog, became a fixture on reality TV. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Rachel Hunter and Kay Johnson all had decked-out dogs for the recent premiere of another reality TV show, 'The Simple Life.'
Now consider that an increasing number of adults are not electing to have children and that there are adults with grown children and no grandchildren. Suddenly dogs -- from large to small 'pocket pets' -- become surrogate offspring. And with these offspring, you don't have to teach them to drive, worry about their SAT scores or pay for college."
